Beyond Tired

Dear servers I managed in D.C. and Fort Lauderdale:

I double and triple sat you all the time. Many apologies.

I begged you to stay late and take the last table that, in the end, only left a 10 percent tip. Many thanks.

I didn’t help pre-set and pre-bus tables enough. Many thanks, again, for getting it done.

I didn’t fully comprehend the concept of being so weeded you were in the thick of the Everglades (to quote beloved Upset Waitress). Many reality checks today.

I didn’t get it. Ha! Now I do.

And it wasn’t even that busy in my little corner of paradise. I am so exhausted I am willing myself to stay up until 9 p.m. Yet, I somehow managed to make a little bit of bank.

Season’s coming, so they say. So we all hope. Bring on the northern blizzards and send ’em down–but give me another couple of weeks to figure out how to write tickets so the cook can read them, carry a tray of food on my shoulder, not slosh trays of drinks, up-sell everything, and recognize this fish from that fish from all the other fish and eggs “oe” from eggs “om” from all the other eggs as they come off the line.

Actually, the job does feel like brain surgery to this gal, what with everything being all mixed up in my head. I’ll get it eventually, right?

    This job and the fact that the cook keeps a flask of vodka on hand is why I drink myself silly. The only thing you need to “get” really is confidence. I say ya totally kicked it today! ๐Ÿ™‚

    I rarely comment but I have to say that it amuses me to no end to think of you and UW together. No offense intended but you two are so different. Your posts are always so classy and “real” while UW….well has a style that is all her own (not sure what it says about me but I read her site long before finding my way here). I’m glad that the two of you found each other. Perhaps her live and let live attitude will do you well. Have fun and enjoy your new life in the keys!

    When I was waiting tables it took me a solid month to get into the grove of a new place. Alas, I was younger then. No idea how long it would take me (if ever) to adapt now. Best of luck, and have fun getting there.

    ya know.. Sometimes a little brain surgery is just what the doctor ordered!

    Keeping busy, learning the ropes- finding your groove which soon enough will make you indespensible— sometimes it’s just what is necessary– keeps you looking forward:). And I know you will get this all figured out- it will become second nature and even fun–

    I have no doubt.

    30 days to “get it”, 60 days til it’s second nature and you don’t have to think about waiting and you can have more fun with your customers :). Give yourself time, you’ll get it.

    Just remember – consolidate trips, and full hands in and full hands out. And smile smile smile!

    Just a tip to help from sloshing drinks on the tray… Hum. Seriously. Just hum quietly, and you won’t spill. I don’t know why, but it works!
