Cold Season

It is cold here in South Florida–10 degrees below normal. The breeze has a kick to it. Ask anyone–it’s a veritable January-like week with lows in the 50s and highs barely in the 70s!

Alma mater emblazoned sweatshirts are once again being dragged out of closets and draped over our shivering forms. Oh sure, the TV weather forecasters tell us this “cold snap” won’t last. But one thing will–our glorious “normal” winter weather that means moderate heat instead of furnace-like temperatures, and humidity levels in the curl-your-hair range rather than perpetual sweat-producing percentages. It’s a great time to live here.

Except that I woke up with a cold this morning that has nothing to do with the chilly air. Understand, I have not had a cold in three years. In fact, I have not been sick with anything in that many years or more. This is not an easy accomplishment when working in restaurants. One server sneezes and everyone, from the back of the house prep cooks to the front of the house hosts eventually comes down with the house plague.

But not me. Never me. So go figure that when the weather turns cool and wonderful, and I am taking a break between restaurant jobs and thus exposed to no germs of consequence, I come down with a stupid, sniveling, head-pounding cold. Ugh.

On the other hand, I now have a bona fide reason to decline an invitation to traipse amongst the throngs at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. I have a nasal-ly-enough sounding voice to make even the most persistent flock member happily accept no as an answer for a let’s-meet-for-drinks suggestion. I have the perfect excuse to wrap up me and the pup in a blanket and watch old movies all day, in between naps.

Unusually cold temps. Unusual cold. Kind of a welcome break, as long as neither last too long.

Most days I’m wearing 2 fleeces and gloves inside the house. Outside I need a hat and scarf too.

    Florida sounds good

wait…did I miss something….taking a break between restaurant jobs….? I know I haven’t read the blog in a while, but did you start a new gig? or looking for a new gig?

I’m glad I’m not the only one, retired restaurant manager! Sometimes you slip really important stuff in there very casually, gal! Are you ready to talk about it? It seemed like on the whole it was a pretty good gig for you. Sorry to hear it didn’t work out.

    Hi Gal,

Your Florida weather sounds tempting. I wish that I was in between gigs, it would be like a welcomed change in the weather… your “in between” sounds intriguing.

    take care,
