Wow…great story! Your description reminds me of my favorite restaurant from my hometown…Every time I head back home I stop by, and realize that even though the faces change, the place just has a soul of its own.

By the way, everytime I comment, I get taken to a page which says there’s been an error, but if I hit “back” and “refresh”, my comment is up. Any idea whether there are any setting problems?

You’ve gone and made me hungry!

Years ago my mother was looking for a room to rent in D.C. She was fresh from Kentucky, a country girl through and through, and completely new in town. Over the telephone, she had just arranged to see a particular room in a boarding house, when the man she was talking to suddenly asked, ‘Are you colored?’ My mother was taken aback and said that no, she was not. ‘Well, we are,’ he told her, ’so I’m afraid you’ll have to find another place.’ My mother apologized and they both hung up — and that was that.

We kids, born and raised in California, used to listen to her tell that story and ask why she had to find another place. It never made any sense to us.

My husband and I are pretty good about trying all places downtown, but I’m sure we’ve missed some. I think it’s time to go exploring again. I’m sure there’s a gem or two we’ve missed.
